Not only have the worst buildings been demolished, there are now stronger rules about who can live in them, and the Housing Authority has more leeway and directive in evicting criminals. Maybe it's not the kind of place you'd want to go for a lone walk after dark, but it's not someplace to worry about when picking a neighborhood. I currently live in Brentwood (between Westwood and Santa Monica) and I consider this very neighborhoody.
